How long does a cord of firewood last?

It comes down to your own burn rate; here is the math to find it.

A full cord lasts face cords per cord ÷ face cords burned per month months. One cord is 3 face cords of 16 inch wood, so at 1 face cord a month it lasts 3 months. How much you burn depends on your stove, your climate and how often you burn, so there is no single right answer.

We do not publish an “average household” burn rate, because it varies too much. Instead, work out your own: count the face cords you used last heating season and divide by the months you burned. The table shows the arithmetic for example rates, not typical ones.

Months one full cord lasts at example burn rates
Burn rate (face cords per month)One cord of 16 in wood (3 face cords)One cord of 24 in wood (2 face cords)
0.56 months4 months
13 months2 months
21.5 months1 month
31 month0.67 months

How to use it

  1. Pick your log length and convert the wood you have to face cords of that length (the firewood calculator does it).
  2. Type how many face cords you burn per month into the calculator’s “How long will it last?” box.
  3. Order a bit more than the answer if you want a buffer for a cold snap.

The face cord and the log length must match: a burn rate counted in 16 inch face cords does not carry over to 24 inch wood. For sizes see how much is a cord of wood.

FAQ

How do I work out how long my firewood will last?

Divide the face cords you have (at your log length) by the face cords you burn per month.

How many face cords are in a cord?

3 with 16 inch logs, 2 with 24 inch logs, 4 with 12 inch logs.

How much firewood do I need for a winter?

Multiply your monthly burn by the number of months you heat with wood. There is no reliable national average, so count last year’s usage.
