Firewood calculator

Stack size or cords in. Cubic feet, cords, face cords and bundles out.

How it works: Cubic feet = length × height × depth. A full cord is 128 ft³ (4 × 4 × 8 ft), so cords = cubic feet ÷ 128. A face cord is 4 × 8 ft × one log length deep, so it is 32 ft² × log length ÷ 12. Bundles = cubic feet ÷ bundle size (an editable assumption, 0.75 ft³ to start).

Firewood amount and prices

What do you know?
Stack length × height × depth
A stack that is one row of logs is as deep as the logs are long. A full cord is 4 ft high × 8 ft long × 4 ft deep (two or three rows).
Bundles and prices (optional)
Store bundles are not standardised. 0.75 ft³ is only a starting guess; check your bundle’s label.
If the seller quotes a face cord, multiply by how many face cords make a cord (3 for 16 in wood).
Burn rates vary with stove, climate and how often you burn, so there is no default. Count how many face cords you used last winter.

No prices are filled in, because firewood prices vary a lot by region, species and season. The comparison appears once you enter a bundle price and a cord price.

FAQ

How many cubic feet are in a cord of firewood?

128 cubic feet of stacked wood, usually shown as 4 ft high × 4 ft deep × 8 ft long.

How much is a face cord compared with a full cord?

A face cord is 4 ft high × 8 ft long × one log length deep. With 16 inch logs that is 42.7 ft³, a third of a cord. With 12, 18 or 24 inch logs it is a quarter, three eighths or half of a cord.

How many bundles of firewood are in a cord?

It depends on the bundle. At the 0.75 ft³ the calculator assumes, a 128 ft³ cord is about 171 bundles, but store bundles are not standardised, so check the label and edit the bundle size.

Is it cheaper to buy bundles or a delivered cord?

It depends on your local prices, so compare them per cubic foot. Enter a bundle price and a cord price and the calculator shows both totals for your amount of wood, plus the most a bundle can cost before the delivered cord wins.
