Grass seed calculator

Lawn size and grass type in. Pounds and bags out.

How it works: Pounds = area ÷ 1,000 × seeding rate (lb per 1,000 sq ft). Rates are mid-range values from university extension guidance and differ for new lawns and overseeding; you can type your bag’s label rate.

FAQ

How much grass seed do I need per 1,000 square feet?

For a new lawn, about 6–9 lb of tall fescue, 2–3 lb of Kentucky bluegrass, 3–6 lb of perennial ryegrass or 4–5 lb of fine fescue. Overseeding takes roughly half to two-thirds of that. The calculator uses the middle of each range.

Does it work for overseeding?

Yes. Switch the project to Overseeding to use the lighter rates for thickening an existing lawn.

Why is St. Augustine not listed?

St. Augustine lawns are planted as sod or plugs, not seed, so there is no seeding rate. Bermuda and zoysia are listed for seeded varieties only.

What if my bag says a different rate?

Use the bag. Open “Seeding rate, bag size and price” and type the label rate; coated seed and blends often differ.
