How much concrete for a 10×10 slab?

A 10 × 10 ft slab is typical for a patio, a 10 × 10 shed base or a hot tub and gazebo pad. Here are the yards, bags and costs at 4, 5 and 6 inches.

A 10 × 10 ft slab 4 inches thick needs 1.36 cubic yards of concrete with 10% extra, which is 62 bags of 80 lb, 82 bags of 60 lb or 123 bags of 40 lb. At 6 inches it needs 2.04 yd³ (92 80 lb bags).

For the 4 in slab, bags are cheaper by about $2, but you would mix and place 62 bags (4,960 lb) before the first batch sets. Your 1.50 yd³ ready-mix order is under the typical 4 yd³ minimum, so the plant adds a short-load fee (about $150 here). That fee is already inside the ready-mix cost above.

Prices used: 80 lb bag $6.50, 60 lb $5.25, 40 lb $4.25; ready-mix $170/yd³ with a $150 short-load fee under 4 yd³ (orders are rounded up to ¼ yd³, 1 yd³ minimum). Local prices vary a lot; change them in the calculator.

Planning notes for 10 × 10 ft

  • Truck access: one truck holds this pour in a single load. Chutes reach about 15–20 ft; farther than that you need wheelbarrows or a pump.
  • Weight: the 4 in pour weighs about 2.7 tons. Bags alone weigh 4,960 lb at 80 lb each.
  • Gravel base: a 4 in compacted gravel base under this slab takes about 1.9 tons (1.4 yd³) with 10% extra. See gravel for a driveway.
  • Thickness: 4 in suits patios, sheds and walks; 5–6 in is common for vehicle loads. See how thick a slab should be.
